Thank you for sharing your experiences, I have really enjoyed reading them. My partner works in the industry and it has always seemed such a curious world to the one I work in.

Thank you.

It is a strange business indeed. But I always loved it when I was in there.

Hi Dan, the ‘real world’ was a bit of a let down I agree. Black Stallion was also my swan song. It didn’t matter if the crews and cast liked you, they weren’t the ones who did the hiring. Luckily I got a job in Cinetape at TV3, thanks again to Avalon alumni Paul West. It’s been a great read and walk down memory lane.

Dan, there's no real evidence from what I've seen that you are a contrarian, more just a person who's seen and experienced a few things and drawn some useful conclusions from them. You've been positive and generous when it's appropriate, a true contrarian would never be so generous as it's a morally bankrupt, often self-centered philosophy. Sadly one infecting our politics right now.

In many ways your post-late-80s experiences were reflected in a whole range of fields. I've heard stories from friends in academia, theatre, literature, classical music and opera with similar resonance. Creatives became "work units" and made to believe their environment was zero-sum - they could not go up unless somebody else went down. Strangely (perhaps with a few exceptions) only contemporary/rock music seemed to be spared. Perhaps "success" or even regular work elusive to pretty much everybody in that domain anyway.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your post TV adventures!
